Metal Braces vs. Clear Braces

Metal Braces vs. Clear Braces
Posted on 03/22/2018

At Lingenbrink & Caballero Orthodontics, we’re proud to offer a comprehensive selection of orthodontic treatments for those in and around Bremerton and Port Orchard, WA. Two of these exceptional treatments that we supply are metal braces and clear braces. If you’re debating whether to get metal braces or clear braces, you’re probably aware of the major difference between the two: one has brackets that are made of metal while the other has brackets that are made out of a clear, ceramic material. While we can’t tell you which one is the best for you specifically, we can, however, help you out in your decision by asking you a few important questions.

Do You Feel Self-Conscious About Your Appearance?

The number one appeal of clear braces is that they avoid the “metal-mouth” appearance that metal braces can give off. Because the ceramic material that the brackets are made out of will blend into your natural tooth structure, your orthodontics won’t be that apparent to others. If you have a professional appearance that you want to keep up or if you’re just self-conscious about the way that you’ll look with braces, clear braces are a preferable option.

Do You Have a Physical Lifestyle?

While clear braces offer a much more discreet treatment, one of the drawbacks is that their ceramic brackets aren’t as durable as their metal counterparts. Because of this, they’re more likely to break. If you have a lifestyle where you engage in physical activities or sports where there’s a strong potential for contact, you may be better suited with metal braces.

Do You Have a Complex Orthodontic Problem?

Tying into the previous point, because the ceramic brackets are more fragile than metal brackets, they’re not as capable of treating complex orthodontic problems. This is because metal brackets can handle much more pressure than ceramic ones, making them optimal for more severe problems.

Do You Have Extra Money to Spare?

Unfortunately, clear braces will also cost more money than metal braces. However, it may not matter if your orthodontic
insurance will cover clear braces as well. Here at Lingenbrink & Caballero Orthodontics, your Bremerton and Port Orchard, WA orthodontist and orthodontic team will be glad to review your insurance to see if clear braces are covered under it.
