What Causes Bad Breath?

Over the years, we at Master Orthodontics have been asked how patients can take measures to ensure not only a great smile, but also great smelling breath. We understand that Gig Harbor, Silverdale, Port Orchard and surrounding areas, like to impress when it comes to their smile. After all, braces allow your teeth to reach their full potential, and it would be a shame to not take measures to ensure your breath matches your beautiful smile. Usually people are wary of speaking about the topic of bad breath, but we’re going to discuss what causes bad breath in our blog today. Let’s take a whif!

Things That Cause Bad Breath

Poor Oral Hygiene – Your dentist and orthodontist have been right all of these years. Brushing and flossing dramatically influence the way your breath smells. Absent of brushing and flossing, bacteria in the mouth builds up to cause bad breath. By simply brushing and flossing your teeth well every day and at least twice a day, you can keep your breath smelling fresh and clean. However, while wearing braces, we recommend brushing at least four times a day to avoid build up around the brackets. Don’t forget to brush the tongue and roof of your mouth, as bacteria builds up there as well.

Certain Foods – Though garlic and onions can add a great sensation of flavor to a meal, they have a pungent smell and when combined with mouth bacteria it can have a lasting odor. Dairy products (e.g., milk, cheese, ice cream, etc.) have the same effect. After eating these foods, be sure to brush your teeth well to keep your breath fresh.

Health Problems – In some cases, bad breath may indicate sickness. Some common illnesses that cause bad breath include, sinus infections, sore throat, tonsillitis, bronchitis, diabetes, pneumonia, as well as some stomach problems and liver diseases. If you’re experiencing any other side effects besides bad breath, be sure to visit a family doctor to have your health evaluated.

Infections of the Mouth – Cavities, gum disease, and impacted teeth can all cause bad breath due to the infection within the mouth. Luckily, those receiving orthodontic care at Master Orthodontics have regular check-ups to ensure that oral health is well-maintained.

Dry Mouth – Dry mouth is usually an uncommon problem, but it can lead to bad breath. Saliva moistens and cleanses the mouth and plays an important role in your oral ecosystem. Therefore, someone lacking saliva in the mouth can have bad breath. This side effect is known as dry mouth, or xerostomia. Dry mouth can be caused by medications, mouth-breathing, or from certain medical conditions. If you have dry mouth, speak with your orthodontist at the next visit to see if there is a clear solution. There are some home remedies, as well as over the counter products such as lozenges that help produce more saliva and therefore diminish the side effects of bad breath.
